The 2017 KIDS COUNT Data Book urges policymakers not to back away from targeted investments that help U.S. children become healthier, more likely to complete high school and better positioned to contribute to the nation’s economy as adults. The Data Book also shows the child poverty rate in 2015 continued to drop, landing at 21%. In addition, children experienced gains in reading proficiency and a significant increase in the number of kids with health insurance.
Discrimination in housing, lending, hiring and education left families of color with fewer resources with which to raise their children. In turn, kids of color had fewer opportunities for health, school or career success leaving them vulnerable to early childbearing. This 2006 fact sheet brings awareness to the issue of racial inequality and teen pregnancy, and provides policy strategies to tackle the issue. While New Jerseyans fare better than their counterparts in other states regarding access to need-based financial aid for higher education, barriers exist for low-income working adult students. By promoting programs that create quality educational options for families and young people, communities can provide the services and supports that are needed to ensure that children succeed in school and in life.
This report analyzes survey data about the use of financial services by families living in the 10 Making Connections cities across the United States. The report evaluates resident responses by their use of bank services, check cashing services, payday lenders, pawn shops and credit cards, as well as how they would respond to financial emergencies. It correlates how factors such as race/ethnicity, immigrant status, income, employment level, and neighborhood of residence influenced the use of financial services. (Author abstract)
A goal of the Casey Foundation is for all young people in tough neighborhoods to graduate from school prepared for adult success. In a poor section of Atlanta, Georgia, Casey partnered with local leaders to promote a preschool-through-college-graduation “connection strategy” that made strides toward school success.
